The fine print, kept short
Terms of Service
NextChapter is a free app for swapping books in person with readers near you. These terms are the agreement between you and NextChapter Books LLC ("NextChapter," "we," or "us") for using the app and next-chapter.app. By creating an account or using NextChapter, you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use the app.
Who can use NextChapter
You must be at least 18 years old to use NextChapter. You need a working email address to sign in, and you're responsible for keeping access to that email secure, since anyone who can open your sign-in links can use your account.
The app is free
NextChapter doesn't charge you to join, list books, or swap. There are no ads. If we ever introduce something that costs money, we'll tell you clearly first, and it won't be required for swapping books.
Swaps happen between readers
NextChapter helps you find readers and arrange swaps, but every swap is between you and the other reader. We are not a party to any swap. We don't own, inspect, or guarantee any book, and we don't guarantee that anyone will show up, trade what they said they would, or behave well.
You meet other people and exchange books at your own risk. Use good judgment:
- Meet in public places, like libraries, coffee shops, and bookstores, during their open hours.
- Keep conversations in the app until you're comfortable, and don't share your home address.
- Tell a friend where you're going, and leave if something feels wrong.
- Check the book before you swap.
Any dispute about a swap is between you and the other reader. If someone breaks these terms or makes you feel unsafe, block them and tell us at nextchapterappsocial@gmail.com. If you are in danger, contact local emergency services first.
Be a good neighbor
When you use NextChapter, you agree not to:
- Harass, threaten, stalk, or intimidate anyone, or show up somewhere they didn't agree to meet you.
- Post anything hateful, sexually explicit, violent, or illegal, in your profile, library, or messages.
- Pretend to be someone else, or create accounts for anyone other than yourself.
- List books you don't have or don't intend to swap, or misrepresent a book's condition.
- Sell, advertise, or solicit money. NextChapter is for swapping, not selling.
- Trade stolen, counterfeit, or pirated items, or anything that isn't a book.
- Collect other readers' information, send spam, or use the app for anything other than swapping books.
- Scrape, overload, reverse engineer, or interfere with the app or its servers, or get around blocks or limits.
Your content
You own what you add to NextChapter: your profile, notes, messages, and wrap-ups. You give us permission to store, display, and transmit that content as needed to run the app, for example showing your library to nearby readers or delivering your messages. That permission ends when the content is deleted, except for copies we keep as described in our Privacy Policy.
Book details and covers come from outside sources such as ISBNdb and Open Library, and may be incomplete or wrong.
Blocking
You can block any reader at any time. Once blocked, you and that reader stop seeing each other in the feed, the nearby list, and swaps. You can unblock them later from your profile. Blocking is not a report to us; if someone is breaking these terms, please also email nextchapterappsocial@gmail.com.
Ending your account
You can delete your account at any time from your profile in the app. Our Privacy Policy explains what is removed when you do.
We may suspend or close an account, or remove content, if we believe it breaks these terms, puts someone at risk, or exposes NextChapter to legal harm. We'll try to tell you why, unless doing so would be unsafe or unlawful. We may also change or stop offering NextChapter, and we'll give reasonable notice where we can.
No warranty
NextChapter is provided "as is" and "as available." To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no promises that the app will always work, be error-free, or be secure, and we make no warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We don't vouch for any reader, book, or meeting place.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, NextChapter and the people who run it are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss, injury, or damage that comes from your swaps, your meetings with other readers, or other readers' conduct. Our total liability for any claim related to NextChapter is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the past twelve months or US $100. Some places don't allow these limits, so they may not fully apply to you.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Colorado, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute about these terms or NextChapter will be handled in the state or federal courts located in Colorado, unless the law where you live gives you the right to bring it there instead.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as NextChapter grows. When we do, we'll change the date at the top, and for meaningful changes we'll tell you in the app or by email before they take effect. If you keep using NextChapter after that, you accept the new terms. If you don't, you can delete your account.
